Hudson Valley NY Bike Tour: Itinerary
Bicycling Vacation in New York's Hudson Valley
Day 1 Meet at The Country Squire, Hudson, NY. Welcome lunch, bike fitting and ride to Olana, Frederic and Isabel Church's hilltop architectural masterpiece. Tour the mansion, and walk through the planned landscape of paths, carriage roads and gardens with sweeping views of the Hudson River. Bike back to Hudson and explore this exciting town before dinner. Dine at the acclaimed Cá Mea restaurant.
Day 2 Today's ride takes us through a spirit calming landscape of pastoral farms and historic villages hardly changed over the ages. We'll visit the Old Chatham Sheepherding Co. where you can sample artisanal cheeses made fresh on the farm and ride through Old Chatham, a thoroughly charming, historic village. By the time we return to Hudson, you may very well feel that you have just returned from a previous century. Next we'll explore the Hudson River from the water while cruising past a historic lighthouse and scenic islands with views of the majestic Catskill Mountains. With luck, perhaps we'll see one of the resident eagles. After, we dine at the much-talked-about Swoon Kitchenbar.
Day 3 Our Hudson Valley bike tour continues as we travel south, following the river to Bard College where you can stop to see architect Frank Gehry's eye-popping performing arts center. Pedal to Montgomery Place, Livingston's meticulously preserved country estate. Stroll through sprawling gardens, lawns and woodlands to find views of the Hudson and Catskills that are unforgettable. Spin through the charming towns of Tivoli and Red Hook where cafés with mouthwatering treats await. Before reaching our destination of Rhinebeck, we'll stop for a relaxing hike at Poet's Walk where we'll be rewarded with sparkling views high above the river. Relax at day's end in picture perfect Rhinebeck where you can visit unique shops while being immersed in history at every turn. Don't miss the antique center in a historic barn right behind our inn! Tonight's dinner is at the always popular and lively Terrapin.
Day 4 Today we travel east for some fabulous cycling through stately horse farms, orchards and vineyards. We'll tour a winery or two and sample the vintages. Enjoy lunch in lovely Millbrook where yet more antique shops have treasures waiting to be found. We return to Rhinebeck on picturesque roads, each seemingly more alluring than the last. Dinner is on your own where you can choose from the many wonderful options.
Day 5 We visit three National Historic Sites by bicycle at the pace of travel when the homes were built - perfect for fully experiencing today's landscape and imagining yesterday's life within it. Springwood was the home that held FDR's heart and to which he always returned and you will see why. There you can also visit his Presidential Library and Museum. The Vanderbilt Mansion is a truly remarkable monument to wealth. We'll explore the house, formal gardens and walk along the bluffs above the river to Bard Rock. The understated simplicity of Eleanor Roosevelt's Val-Kill comes as a striking contrast to the Vanderbilt estate. Here we will tour her peaceful retreat and hike in the footsteps of kings and queens to Top Cottage, FDR's hilltop getaway where he held pivotal meetings that shaped world history. Tonight you will be treated to a superlative dinner at the renowned Culinary Institute of America.
Day 6 We complete our journey by cycling back to Hudson, renewed by glorious sights, invigorated by our exercise and gladdened by new friends.
