Inlets and Isles: Rhode Island Coast Cycling Trip

Day 1  After transfers from the airport or train station, embark from Point Judith on the Rhode Island coast on the early afternoon ferry to Block Island. Enjoy refreshments and ocean views at our hilltop inn while your guides fit your bike. Shake out the sea legs on our first island ride in a setting the Nature Conservancy termed one of the “Last Great Places.” Later, enjoy tapas, cocktails and views from the veranda at our island retreat before heading to Great Salt Pond for a spectacular sunset sail aboard our custom trimaran. Relax, enjoy wine and cheese, and let the cares of the world slip away. Enjoy dinner at our waterfront restaurant while the stars come out over the sparkling harbor lights.

Day 2   After breakfast, our cycling trip continues as we bike a coastal route to our trailhead. Walk an ocean-hugging trail that affords unforgettable views of the beach below and bird-filled maritime scrub up close. The much-photographed North Light rewards us at trail’s end. Explore the lighthouse and the gorgeous beaches surrounding it. Next we pedal through idyllic island landscapes to New Harbor for lunch and our eco-kayak adventure. After, take time to relax on the beach or in town. Enjoy fresh seafood and more at tonight’s wonderful restaurant.

Day 3   Following breakfast, we’ll ride to Southeast Lighthouse and the majestic Mohegan Bluffs. Tour the lighthouse and museum or find the perfect shell on the secluded beach at the base of the bluffs. Pedal to Old Harbor and enjoy lunch while ferrying back to the mainland. Our cycling trip continues as we bike along the Rhode Island coast through the resort community of Narragansett with its wide sandy beaches, then on to tranquil Conanicut Island. Pedal through sheep and cattle farms, past a classic windmill to the Beavertail Lighthouse. From the island’s quaint village of Jamestown, hop on the ferry to Newport keeping an eye out for America’s Cup class boats and motor yachts from all over the world. Arrive at our historic inn in the heart of the Old Quarter, then relax over dinner at one of Newport’s fine restaurants. Enjoy a GFA exclusive lantern-light tour of Newport with our local historian as we journey back in time through 300 years of history to explore the waterfront and historic streets.

Day 4    Our exploration of the Rhode Island coast continues as we walk a section of the famous Cliff Walk, finishing with a tour of the awe-inspiring Breakers mansion. Then, we bike a spectacular cycling route past commanding yacht clubs, pastoral sheep farms, seaside estates, and rocky headlands as Rhode Island's past and present combine to offer incredible vistas along Ocean Avenue. Depart from Newport at the conclusion of this cycling trip through Rhode Island’s stunning coast and idyllic isles.
