Day 1  Our Vermont adventure begins as we embark from Woodstock on our first fun bike ride through equestrian countryside, sleepy hamlets and a wildlife management area of beaver lodges and moose habitat. Watch for mink and otter too as we pedal through this unique ecosystem of bogs, seeps, vernal pools and ponds. Climb to a ridgeline with sweeping views then coast downhill past crystal clear lakes and streams en route to the Calvin Coolidge Homestead and a historic cheese factory. Another long, gradual downhill brings us effortlessly to a local brewery. Sample the various brews and perhaps some of the locally famous buffalo wings. Return to our inn for cocktails on the veranda overlooking the Ottaquechee River before we stroll to dinner together.

Vermont adventure

Day 2 The diverse beauty of Vermont continues to unfold as we pedal through covered bridges, past a blueberry farm, and stop at classic country stores. Bicycle through fertile farmland and colorful woodland watching for roadside maple stands or “sugarbushes” with strung sap lines awaiting sugaring season. Cross the Connecticut River and enter New Hampshire’s Hanover. Enjoy lunch and fine shops in Dartmouth College’s bustling hometown. Top off lunch with a treat at an award-winning artisan bakery and school. Bike along a second wide river to picturesque sheep and cattle farms, watching for wild turkeys. Delight in charming Quechee with its covered bridge, polo fields, powerful waterfall and the renowned Simon Pearce Glassworks. Watch master glassblowers create masterpieces, then head to the Quechee Gorge to view one of Mother Nature’s masterpieces. Bike along a third sparkling river to our retreat on its banks in Woodstock. Enjoy another fine dinner together, sharing stories of our day.

Day 3 After breakfast, our Vermont adventure continues as we travel to a classic country village, past one of the oldest ski areas in the country and reputed home to the first ski tow in the eastern US. Bicycle to the next charming town, browse through the rustic yet cultured country store-cum-post office then relax on the shores of a sparkling lake. A gradual climb out of town is rewarded by miles of easy downhill as we return to Woodstock to say our goodbyes, grateful for the treasures of natural beauty and authentic lifestyle we have found in central Vermont.
